LABTEST01: TatsuSNAKE
Backstory
Labtest 01 was an April fools joke game I made following a tutorial for the Godot game engine on how to make a game of Snake, I created a new character for it, named Tatsu.
The game was originally just a one screen buggy little test, since then I've been improving my skills at programming in Godot's language, so for 2024's April fools I decided to create a remastered version, which is what you can download now, I don't have plans to release the old version again so if you have it, then uh, congrats.
Setting
Tatsu is part of an alien species from an unnamed planet, where the people can elongate their bodies at will, their power is theorized to be significantly increased from consuming a swirly purple fruit that grows naturally in the planet.
He's a researcher recruited by a mysterious organization from a space traveling civilization, which is dedicated to observing and analyzing data about Elasticity in the universe for some unknown reason. They were interested in Tatsu for being part of this naturally elastic species and a recently graduated researcher who sent signals into space hoping to discover something out there. As part of his new position he runs tests on himself and sends the data to them over several layers of security, as the members of this species are considered technologically inferior and still haven't discovered life outside their planet.
Final thoughts
The goal of this test is simply to emulate the Snake game, Tatsu's body grows as he consumes more fruit, his speed increasing as well, until inevitably you have to crash. There's no endscreen other than somehow consuming every bit of space available, but I added some extra mechanics to be a bit different from just snake. The main difference is that the camera is following Tatsu's head, and the area is much more wide open, there's gems that spawn randomly over the map that you can collect and spend to use two abilities. The first ability is a sensor to track where the fruit is located in the map, something that will be more useful as you start growing too big, the other ability lets you randomize where the fruit is located at, and it can be used as many times as you can as long as you have the gems for it.
I definitely had more plans to expand onto this game, such as adding a save feature or even online score sharing, but since it was made mostly as a joke for my small group of followers I decided it'd be best to call it done for now and focus on something new.
